The Woods and Whites Home Tour: Farmhouse Living Room.

, ,

Hey friends! πŸ™‹πŸ»  I’m excited to take you on a tour of our living area all done up in soothing and peaceful woods and whites!  After taking down the happy clutter of Christmas, I was craving simplicity with my home decor, and I love the combination of wood tones and creamy whites.  The whites and creams echo the winter sky and the snowy ground, while the wood tones help warm things back up.  It’s such an easy and simple way to create a base of decor, and, when inspiration hits or you get bored, you can just pop in some fun color…your neutral base is already established, and you don’t have to start the room from scratch!

Oh man, if you’ve followed me on Instagram for very long, you know I’ve got a love affair goin’ on…with throw pillows.  WHITE throw pillows, to be exact.  πŸ˜  It’s true love, and I don’t care who knows it!  One way to add interest when decorating with white is to layer textures, and these embroidered and nubby linen pillows do the trick.  Plus…ya can’t beat a French-inspired chair at a discount.  YUM.  (Products linked at the end of the post!)  Throw in a chippy old side table, some baby corbels, vintage books and old church windows…aaaaaaaaand done.  πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ˜‚

Well…I might need to cheat on the pillows, because this chunky, curvy, French farmhouse beaut steals my heart errrrrry time I walk in the room!  This big lady is almost nine feet long, and she was the perfect compromise for the space.  We didn’t want to do built-ins, but we needed something large enough to fill up the space while disguising all the electrical thing-a-ma-jigs, so we repurposed this old buffet table found at a local antique shop!  I went heavy on the distressing, because I like to make sure to strike a balance between the two styles I’m mixing in here: French country and farmhouse.  The curvy, ornate buffet was pulling a bit too far towards the French-y side, so some serious farmhouse distressing brought it back towards the middle.  Nothing beats a coat of chippy white paint!

It’s all in the details when you aren’t using much color in a space, and it’s a fun little game to layer up on the textures!  Chippy spindles, vintage hand cart turned coffee table, tufted French-inspired ottoman, nubby white pillows.  These are a few of my favorite things!  (Commence Julie Andrews in my head the rest of the day.  GAH! πŸ˜©πŸ˜‰πŸŽΆ)

One of my most frequently received questions is, “Why in the heck do you have white furniture with four little kids in the home?”  πŸ˜‚  I get it.  I really do.  These white slipcovers are a risk, for sure.  But you know what else?  They are WASHABLE!  πŸ™ŒπŸ»  Probably once a month or so, we strip off the covers, run them through the washer and then only PART WAY through the dryer.  Did you know if you put them back on while still a bit damp, you won’t have to iron?!?!  HALLELUYER.  Just pull and tug, and they’ll dry pretty smooth!  Beats an hour of ironing ANY day.  This sofa is the IKEA Ektorp with the added chaise on the end, and it is pretty great for the price.  A fraction of the other versions out there, and, while it isn’t quite as deep and plush as the Pottery Barn version, it’s also less than half the price!  The Ektorp is a bit firm at first, but it has softened over time, and we love the inexpensive slip covers that go with it!  IKEA for the (budget-friendly) win!!

So what about you?  Do you use much white in your home?  Ever considered a white sofa…?!?!  I’d love to hear how you incorporate woods and whites into your own home decor!

White slipcovers are look great and what’s even better is that you can thrown them in the wash with a scoop of Oxyclean when your husband spills a full glass of red wine on one of the cushions.
