Need a quick way to get dressed and out the door in the morning? Consider organizing your closet and/or capsule wardrobe with outfit recipes! I tend to come back to similar colors, patterns and cuts as my personal style develops, and I’ve found it super helpful to sort of look at my closet as a series of easy recipes. Add a few coordinating pieces together each day, and boom! Out the door quick and easy and feeling beautiful with minimal effort…because you put in the work at the front end!

Today, I’m looking one of my very favorite outfit recipes: mustard yellow + white/cream + denim (and a little cognac leather thrown in for good measure). Mustard yellow/daffodil/gold hues are some of my very favorites, and I’m tired of saving them only to wear during the fall. Let’s bring some yellow into spring this year! Here’s how I mix and match my recipe components (and some of these looks can and do transition easily into other seasonal capsules of mine, too).

My usual sizing for reference:
5’8″ 135lbs
Pants – size 4/26

Tops – size S
Shoes – size 8

MUSTARD: Wide leg crops – of all the styles and brands I’ve tried, these are the best. Thicker material so no see-through peek-a-boo, great deep pockets and they don’t loose their shape. Wearing my size 4.

WHITE: Button tank – adjustable straps and cute buttons make this a super versatile piece for my seasonal capsules. Wearing S.

DENIM: Jacket – I’ve had this one for almost 8 years, and I love it so much! I’ll link a similar one from same brand. Wearing S in this one.

COGNAC: Strappy heels – These are from two years ago, but I’ll link the newer version out this year. Great inexpensive knock-off that’s very comfy! Wearing size 8.

MUSTARD: Cardigan – I’ve had this for years (linking the updated version) and love it for so many seasons! Easy to throw on over a tee with jeans for a casual vibe. Linking the newest version here. Wearing the S.

WHITE: Graphic tee – Although I can’t keep plants and flowers alive, I do love this cute, vintage-inspired tee. I sized up two sizes though to get a true t-shirt fit. Wearing a L.

DENIM: Tomgirl jeans – I like that this are looser than skinny jeans but not as baggy as true boyfriend jeans. Wearing size 4.

COGNAC: Woven slides – Love these. So comfy, so interesting with the pattern, and I’ve def gotten my money’s worth! Fit TTS.

MUSTARD: Button skirt – LOVE. Love love love. It has pockets. Need I say more? Sized up to a 6.

WHITE: Button down shirt – I’ve been eyeing this one for a year, so I finally added it to the capsule. Such a flattering fit, because it’s roomy in the torso but the sleeves nip in just enough to slim things back down. Wearing S.

DENIM: Jacket – see above

COGNAC: Strappy heels – see above

MUSTARD: Kimono – It’s like a cardigan for the warmer months, and kimonos are especially nice if you just aren’t wanting to have all your parts on display even when it’s toasty outside. Breezy and easy! This one is old, so linking similar inexpensive option. Wearing S.

WHITE: Lace cami – double layered, so it’s less see-through! Wearing S but could have used a M, I think.

DENIM: Dark skinny jeans – Some of my faves from my favorite place to buy denim! Wearing my size 26.

COGNAC: Sandals – Love that these have a toe strap like flip flops so my toes don’t slide forward and over the edge! Went up a half size to 8.5.

MUSTARD: V-neck tee – Inexpensive yet really great quality! Used a little rubberband to make a half ponytail. Wearing a M.

WHITE: (could throw on a white cardigan or swap out tee for white button down)

DENIM: Chambray stripe skirt – Same as the mustard (pockets and flowy!!), and went up one size to a 6 for no overhang at the waistband. Looks like this color is sold out currently, but THIS PINK striped version is adorable, too.

COGNAC: Sandals – see above

MUSTARD: Linen shorts – Went up one size to a M in these for added length, and I love how light and airy they are for the warmer months ahead!

WHITE: (could swap out for simple white tee or button tank above)

DENIM: Button down shirt – I’ve had this one for a few years, and it’s proven to be quite versatile. Sized down to XS.

COGNAC: Birkenstocks – love the fun twist on the classic sandal, and I have these in 38.

There you go, friends! An easy outfit recipe for your seasonal wardrobe capsules, and I’m excited to bust out the mustard yellow in the spring and summer this year! Hope this was helpful, and thank you for stopping by today!

  6. […] looks best with those shorts? The questions continue on and on. Thankfully, she shared the idea of “Outfit Recipes” and I was blown away by how smart it is!! Granted, I can’t take any credit for it […]

Ok, you’ve turned me onto Madewell denim. Ive bought two different pair so far. But it seems that in the stiffer, not so stretchy jean from them I need to size up? Or will they give? I’ve gotten different feed back from people. I like the pair you have on in your spring capsule pic and am thinking of ordering them but wanted to see about your opinion first. Do they stretch out a lot, do I need to stick with normal size or size up/down. Sorry if this is a silly question, but you seem to be a hug fan of theirs. I have since following you on Insta recently also bought the Madewell Tote and so many of their T-shirts. Thanks for sharing!!!
