Hey friends!
Okay, by popular demand, here’s an all-at-once glimpse at my capsule wardrobe for this spring season!  I may have left out a piece or two on photo day if they were hiding in the piles of laundry, and as I said in this post, I like to save a few “cheat” purchases to make throughout the season to keep things fresh and fun…BUT!  90% of my spring wardrobe is shown here in this post, and I’m going to spend the next few weeks sort of breaking it down, styling similar pieces multiple ways and chatting about my must-have pieces from the capsule, especially those items that have lasted me years and years!

If you’re still a little foggy on the point of a capsule wardrobe, you can click [HERE] to see why I’ve been doing these for almost six years now and the easy way I suggest to get started!  Ever stood in your jam packed, bursting-at-the-seams closet with your hand on your hip frustrated because you have “nothing to wear”….?  YEP.  Been there.  Capsule wardrobes take the guess work out of quickly getting ready for the day (because you curate a wardrobe that ALL goes together seamlessly), and you’ll always feel beautiful, comfortable and put together no matter which outfit you choose from your capsule (because you took a bit of time on the front end to curate ONLY your favorite pieces that you love to wear)!  Truly…it’s been a game changer for me in the mornings, for my budget and how I spend my money, and, although I’m a little less cut and dry, strict strict strict than most professional capsule bloggers, I do honestly swear by the process, the ultimate goal of mindful spending and closet curation, and I think if anything capsule wardrobes are a great way to get a crazy closet/spending situation back to a healthy baseline.  🙌🏻

See below for links to the easy five step method shown above in order to get started, and then scroll down to check out an all-at-once glimpse of my personal spring capsule!

The Cotton Stem Capsule Process

1 – Purge and Pile
2 – Nerd Alert List Time
3 – Fashion Show
4 – How Pinteresting
5 – Pull It Together, Girl!

Because I know I’ll get asked, I’m going to link by row as many of the pieces from my capsule that I can find still for sale online…just scroll through and click the pic for info!  If a particular item is old or sold out, I will include a very similar option for ya.  🙌🏻  These are affiliate links – thanks for supporting me so I can put together series like these for you buddies o’ mine!

For reference, I’m in Oklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plains…constantly tricking you into believing spring has sprung, only to send blasts of winter chill when you least expect it.  🙄  Thus, I like to keep a few cardigans and light layers mixed in with my spring capsule.  You’ll see above that I’m drawn to neutrals, denim, white, along with pops of soft pastel color and muted patterns and textures to add interest.  If you followed the steps on how to curate a capsule like this, you’ll already spot ways to pair up, mix and match and get creative with all of these pieces that were purposefully chosen to GO together.  They all work together, which means I can quickly and easily grab an outfit out of my closet and hit the road with my four little kiddos!  Easy peasy!

Now that you have a pretty good idea of the look and feel of my personal capsule, hopefully this will help guide you as you begin to create your own.  Over the next few weeks, I’ll show you (mostly only Instagram stories…be sure to follow along [HERE] so you won’t miss this series!) how I mix and match the pieces in my capsule, so stay tuned!
❤ERIN

PS-Anything you’d like to see styled or explained that isn’t covered in the above section or the capsule how-to series?  Let me know what you guys like to see and I’ll try to make it happen to be helpful for ya!

Girrrrl Gray flowy top bottom row isn’t linked and I’m dying for it! Hayyyyylp!

    • Erin | Cotton Stem says:

It’s from Cloth + Cabin actually! Wouldn’t let me link it in the row, but they have the cutest stuff!!

  3. Lauren says:

This is so helpful! Thank you! Have started my closet purge already… Thanks for the inspiration!

  4. Caitlin says:

Omg! Can’t wait to try this method out for myself. My closet is packed & im always fumbling through trying to find something.
After you have done the guide for a capsule, do you put the rest of your clothes away until the next season? Or do you have your spring (or other seasonal) items out on a display rack elsewhere?

  5. I’ve shied away from capsules in the past because they seemed too strict (and small!!) and I’m always afraid I’ll get bored with a limited number of clothes. But yours looks so do-able with the variety of pieces & pretty colors! Definitely making me want to jump in & I’m excited to see how you mix & match everything!

Ok so what if you live on a little farmette and you’re outside in the garden and with the animals a good bit of the time in spring and summer?…I feel like I need a 2nd capsule for trash clothes! And workout clothes…and clean lounge clothes for evenings after I’m all cleaned up! It’s really helping to consolidate my “good clothes”, but I feel like there’s still so much more!

All that said, love your style and your inspiration. You’re a fave on insta for me every day! Thanks for all you do!

  7. Vicki Weaver says:

Up until last year, my spending was out of control. As you mentioned in the post, I would open my closet and not know what to wear. And although I’m still at that point, my goal is to start a Spring capsule and push myself into this way of thinking. I want to love everything I have! Thank you for introducing this to us!

  8. Tamara says:

I love your style! Do you store your off season clothes away out of your closet? We don’t have a very big closet to begin with, and I’ve gotten ALL my clothes down to a manageable amount that fits all year. But I was wondering if you keep your off season stuff out of sight when you do a capsule wardrobe. Thanks!

  9. Nicole says:

Thank you for putting this all together! Love your style xo

  10. Heidi says:

I love your inspiration and this spring capsule … FABULOUS ! what do you do when you are weeks in and you are out of ideas??

  11. Ashley Watson says:

A friend recommended your blog and instagram to me and I am so glad she did! I just have to say that I am loving your blog and this post in particular was VERY helpful! I too have a closetful of random things and struggle to figure out how to pull it all together! I love all your tips and tricks! The capsule idea is awesome. I REALLY hope someone is paying you for this because you ROCK! Keep them coming and thanks for sharing!!!!

  12. Jessica says:

Hey, Erin! On the long grey maxi, do you have any suggestions for something like that but not v-neck? I have a large chest and v-necks often show too much. I was hoping you had seen one VERY similar but with a higher neck.

  13. Sharon says:

Are these just “go to town” clothes? I love the idea of a capsule and I’m trying to get there. but

  14. Whitney says:

I just got a pair of overalls & can’t wait to see how you style yours for inspiration!

    • Erin | Cotton Stem says:

Oh fun! I’ll try and show a couple ideas soon! Do you follow @karlareed on IG? She has awesome overalls styling tips!

  15. Ashley says:

Hi Erin! Do you have any tips/tricks on keeping your capsule wardrobe in good shape since you are rotating the same pieces over and over? Do you wash AND dry every time? Do you iron/steam? Help me out! 🙂 I feel like my “basic tees” (for example) lose their life after wearing them so many times but yours never seem to look like that

    • Erin | Cotton Stem says:

I hang or lay flat to dry a lot of my more delicate pieces and types of fabric, and some items do just wear out over time. I don’t think you have to keep the item FOREVER for it to count as doing a capsule. Certain pieces won’t always last, but keeping mine out of the dryer seems to help!

  16. Amy says:

Hi Erin! This has been the most helpful thing for my closet, and my budget. I need to get up and go most mornings, and the capsule is giving me so much versatility with such ease. There are just a few more pieces I’m hunting for, and then it will be complete. Can you recommend your two favorite handbags? I’m hoping to narrow it down to two – one for every day (a little bigger to mom in) and then maybe a cute crossbody for date night/hubby’s work dinners (or randomly out without kids haha). I’m the one on IG that asked if you could style with bags BTW and it’s been so helpful 😉 🙂 Thank you!

  17. Dusty Creighton says:

The last several years have been spent growing our family. Now that I know we’re done having kids I need a closet purge of all maternity/nursing wear and a solid refresh. Almost everything I’ve purchased over the last several years has been out of sheer necessity and I haven’t invested in great every day clothes (except my gym clothes that I pretty much live in). Every time I’ve searched blog posts on capsules I’ve been intimidated by the strong limits, or the lack of style that suits my life. I feel inspired not only by your adorable wardrobe, that would work for a SAHM like me, but also on your flexibility and lack of concern for hard numbers! That jacket in the last row is to die for!

  18. Christine Lopez says:

Love!!! Do you have tips or ideas on vacation wardrobe capsules?? Headed to Hawaii for 7 days and would love any tips or ideas you may have!

    Thank you.

  19. Holly says:

On your Instagram April 2018 post about your capsule you have a toe cover strappy sandal. Light tan. Any idea what brand?

  20. Lovely all of these gorgeous outfits! There is so an amazing article. Thanks a lot for sharing.
