This is one of our favorite traditions. Every year around the first day of summer break, I swap out the backpacks and surprise them with some summer celebration mudroom decor! Out with the books and lunch boxes and in with some fresh (and inexpensive) summer toys. It’s always a surprise when I’m going to set it up for them. I usually pick a theme, and this year it was cacti since I apparently can’t get enough of plants right now. 😉 (HERE’s one plant I’m working hard at keeping alive…have you tried this one??).

Anyway, the big cactus sprinklers will make for hours of summer fun with our new neighborhood pals. And what better way to towel off than those huge, fluffy beach towels? 😑 FAIL. Instead I bought cacti hand towels, but hey! Ya can’t win ’em all, right? Sidewalk chalk is a must, and the beach balls and cactus sippy cups were a fun little touch, too. This year, I set this all up while they were resting. The girls were so excited to come downstairs and see this. In our fam, this signals that summer fun has BEGUN! (It also forces me to clean out their backpacks before the start of school NEXT year…which I have been known to put off until then, yikes. 🥴)

These ideas are just precious! I look forward to your summer mudroom switcheroo every year and this year did not dissapoint! Is it weird that I get as excited as your sweet girls when you reveal the new summer goodies?😂 I have started a similar tradition with my kiddos by having a surprise luau with decorations, favorite foods , new beach towels a sand pit and of course dance music to signal that the luau has begun. Isn’t being a mom so fun! Btw, how did your outdoor tree lights turn out? Did I miss the reveal?
I always love seeing what you do for the summer kickoff for your girlies. wishing you and your sweet family a wonder filled summer! Take care!

Love that you pulled together the Stemmies’ favorites — any of these hold up well for a long car ride or plane day, or are they more bedtime-story material? Always on the hunt for books that survive the chaos of travel.
That Stemmies’ reading list is exactly what I need to load up my Kindle before our next trip — any travel-friendly picks from it that are light enough for the beach but still worth the suitcase space?
The cacti theme is perfect for summer—and I love that you swap out the backpacks as a surprise instead of just telling them break started. Do you let them help pick the theme each year, or is the reveal half the fun?
